When it comes to the fundamentals of singing it’s easy to get carried away with all the moving parts of singing but I’ve narrowed it down to this …

  1. Breath
  2. Body
  3. Voice

In our Singit Syllabus, we explain our Singit Fundamentals to a healthy happy voice.

1. Breath

When it comes to singing, Diaphragmatic breathing is super important, but it’s more than just knowing how to breathe into your diaphragm, It’s also knowing that the Diaphragm is your main breathing muscle. Understanding how it works and knowing that it is the foundation of your entire voice. More than that it’s learning how to engage the diaphragm when singing because breathing determines how your sound will sound. Engaging your diaphragm relaxes your throat, reduces nasality in your tone and improves resonance.

2. Body

YOU are your Instrument! This is where we get into how your body plays a part in singing. Posture, posture, posture is just as important as breathing when you’re singing. Your body alignment affects the overall sound and quality your voice. That means body warm ups are just as important as vocal warm ups. Our singing syllabus goes into detail about body stretches that help with neck, jaw and shoulder tension; spine alignment as well as chin scoops and tongue exercises that can also have an effect on the sound we produce.

3. Voice

When it comes to the voice, one of the things I first focus on is warming up the vocal cords for at least 10-15 minutes.  Three exercises you can do to warm up your voice are:

  1. Lip Trills
  2. Sirens
  3. And various 3 note and 5 note scales which you can get here.

Check out our 5-minute warm up or 11-minute warm up!

Singing is about applying the correct breathing into the songs you are singing & really feeling the difference diaphragmatic breathing adds to your Instrument. The 3 Fundamentals of our Singit Syllabus are : Breathing, Vowel Formation, & Tongue Placement. These 3 things will allow you freedom of voice.

Exercises to help with this are

  1. Yawn Sighs
  2. Tongue Push ups
  3. Italian Vowels I E A O U
