Are you breathing from your diaphragm? Breathing is the foundation of your entire voice, and determines how your sound will sound. When our instructors talk about supporting the voice, they are typically referring to Diaphragmatic Breathing, also known as belly breathing.
What does Diaphragmatic Breathing do for your voice?
- Relaxes your throat,
- Reduces nasality in your tone,
- Blends your registers,
- Improves resonance,
- Protects your voice, and,
- Widens your range!
Here’s an exercise for you to try to practice breathing from the diaphragm:
- Pretend that you’re breathing in through a straw
- Hold it for four counts
- Breathe out on an S-sound
